End of Season Round Up

Sunday 2nd September.  v. Windsor Great Park  (Men's Invitation Triples)
Twyford's men were triumphant in the last week of their season, winning the ' Men's Invitation Triples' played at  Windsor Great Park,  the team of P.Hynes, N.Orde and skip P.Rose won convincingly taking maximum points. 

Saturday/Sunday 8/9th September - (Finals weekend)
It was then onto the finals weekend where Brian Stain won the men's championship in a tough match against Nick Orde, it was all to play for on the last end with  Stain getting the shot to win  21-20.  Ann Pope won the ladies championship winning against
 Ann Harris  21- 12 . Several matches were decided on the last shot, making it  a thrilling end to the season.

With September looming the men’s leagues are now finished, sadly relegation for the KLV players 
but a great experience for several first season bowlers who were called upon to play. 

Saturday 18th August.  -  "The Battle of the Sexes" Club Competition
Saturday was a club in house  competition "The Battle of the Sexes" a yearly game between the ladies and the men, the cup was currently held by the men, 
so the ladies were determined  to win the day,  there was much jollity and fun, but once again the men were too tough and won the day to keep the cup.  
Top rink was Phil Rose (skip) with Brian Stain and Rodney Tomes.

Wednesday 15th August.  v. Wargrave (Hedges Cup)
A short drive to near neighbours Wargrave on Wednesday for 6 mixed triples for the yearly battle for the Hedges Cup, 
played in honour of  Ron Hedges a policemen who had played for both Twyford and Wargrave.  
Twyford were the current holders of the cup and hoping to keep it that way.  Once again a great score from Jan Walker (skip) 
with Alan Wrigley and Terry Thorne  32-9  gave a huge boost to Twyford  At the half way stage Wargrave were winning by 2 shots, 
but Twyford did not want to leave the cup behind and although it was 3 rinks each they pulled ahead by 22 shots to win  113-91

Tuesday 14th August.  v. Suttons
The ladies took victory when they travelled to Suttons on Tuesday for 3 triples, it was a close game with just two shots in it, 
but once again Jan Walker scored an impressive 24- 5 to take top rink and secure the match.

Saturday 11th August.  v. Trentham
Saturday 11th saw Twyford play host to Trentham in a friendly 4 mixed triples match, although, 
the skies were black and threatening with a cold wind, there was plenty of laughter on the green. 
Twyford lost on 3  rinks, and drew 1.  Jan Walker (skip) with Jean Bennett and Neil Patchin once again saved the day,  
managing  to get a draw which saved Twyford from a whitewash. Final score 46- 70 Twyford losing by 24 shots.

Wednesday 8th August.  v. Burghfield
Wednesday Twyford travelled to Burghfield for a pleasant evening of 5 mixed triples. 
The game was hard fought on several rinks, skip Gordon Wheeler was losing 3-12 at the half way mark but fought back to end with a draw. 
Jan Walker battled all the way, at the half way mark she was level 5-5 and slowly edging ahead 
when Burghfield got 5 on the 17th end leaving them going into the last end  13-13 but determined Jan Walker, 
with the help of Mr and Mrs Boles triumphed and took the last end to win her game by 1 point. 
Top rink went to Paul Hynes (skip) who fought back after losing a 6 on the 3rd end to win 20-13.  
Nevertheless Burghfield won the match by 8 shots 70-78.

Sunday 5th August.  v. Farley Hill
Twyford started the week with a friendly  away game of 4 mixed rinks at Farley Hill. At the half way stage Twyford were down by 15 shots, 
but a great win by skip Ann Pope 23-4  helped to turn the match around and Twyford won 65-57

Satuday 4th August.  v. Glory Mills
On Saturday in the blazing heat Twyford travelled to Glory Mills in Wooburn to what was probably the most challenging green of the season, 
at the half way mark it was a draw17-17 , however practice makes perfect and despite the varying swing of the green, Twyford won by 16 points. 
Top rink was Brett Sedlacek, Tina Scherer and (skip) Phil Rose 26-9

Friday 3rd August.  v. Wokingham B (KLV)
Fridays KLV against Wokingham B was a game of two halves with Twyford winning at the half way mark, albeit by 2 points, 
but they could not maintain the lead and the prospect of relegation looms 
closer, with losses on all rinks and 17 points adrift and no points.

Wednesday 1st August.  v. Maidenhead Thicket
On Wednesday Twyford travelled to Maidenhead Thicket, for the yearly match for the 'Roy Willet Cup' . 
Roy Willet played for both Twyford and the Thicket and when he died in 2002 it became a yearly event in his memory. 
This year Twyford were the winners by 86-71   Skip Barry Carter's top rink score of 32-5 was a great boost for Twyford who had 2 winning rinks, 
1 drawn rink and 2 losses

Tuesday 31st July.  v. Wokingham
On Tuesday the first match of the week was the ladies who played host to Wokingham for 3 rinks of triples, in a very tight game, 
the score zig zagged throughout the match, Twyford were ahead at the half way mark, but Wokingham edged ahead to win by 3 shots. 
Twyford's top rink was skipped by Tina Scherer 16-15 , final score 41-44

Tuesday 31st July.  v. Reading B (KL)
Also on Tuesday the men played an away Kennet League match against Reading B, winning 2 rinks and losing 2. Paul Hynes was playing with a man short 
so lost a percentage of his score to take him from 30-12 to 22-12. The final score was 74-83 with Twyford ending with 4 points to Readings 10

Sunday 29th July.  Alf Prime Triples
Sunday was an In-House competition day,  with 8 teams competing for the 'Alf Prime Triples Competition' a yearly event. 
Played over several rounds ending with two teams who will now go through and play the final in September at the Finals Weekend, 
the two teams are:

Saturday 28th July.  v. Shiplake
On Saturday Twyford travelled to Shiplake, though judging by the score they probably wished they hadn't bothered. 
Shiplake won by a decisive 32 points, winning 3 of the 4 rinks. Our top rink was skipped by Neil Patchin with a very respectable 25-10.

Friday 27th July.  v. Maiden Erleigh (KLV)
In the KLV Twyford welcomed Maiden Erleigh, but disappointingly lost by 3 points 44-47,  losing on 2 of the 3 rinks, 
resulting in just 2 points with 8 going to the opposition. Paul Hynes skipped Twyford's top rink 20-12, being his third wining rink of the week, 
although on Wednesday he was playing for the opposition.

Wednesday 25th July.  v. Tilehurst
A change of fortunes on Wednesday when Twyford played host to Tilehurst for a  friendly 5 rink mixed triples match, 
losing by 2 rinks to 3 with a shortfall 35 points. although one of the Tilehurst winning rinks was skipped by Paul Hynes a Twyford player 
as Tilehurst were short on manpower, it was a good friendly game, on a very hot summers evening.

Tuesday 25th July.  v. Wargrave (KL)
A great result on Tuesday for the men in the Kennet League against near neighbours Wargrave. Winning conclusively, 
they were ahead from start to finish on all four rinks, giving them a well deserved 14 points.

Saturday 21st July.  v. Southampton OBC
On Saturday Twyford played away, with a trip to Southampton for six mixed triples.
At the halfway mark it was neck and neck with Twyford leading by 1 shot 55-54 but Southampton proved too much and won 90-117. 
It was the ladies who shone in the sun with top rink skipped by Tina Scherer 30-16, with  good a back up from skip Ann Harris, 21-10.

Thursday 19th July.  v. Royal Household
On Thursday Twyford's ladies played 3 rinks of triples at an away fixture against Royal Household at Windsor. 
At the midway point Twyford had inched ahead winning 25-22 but by the end Windsor had upped their game and won the match 32-48

Tuesday 17th July.  v. Wokingham 'C'  (KL)
In the Kennett League Twyford had a great result playing at home against  Wokingham 'C' Twyford won on all four rinks led by 
Barry Carter (23 - 9), Brian Stain (27 - 11), Phil Rose (19 - 14), and Nick Orde (25 - 11).  Overall, Twyford won by 94 - 45 shots, 
meaning that Twyford gained all 14 points from the game

Saturday 14th July.  v. Great Holland's 
Finally a friendly on Saturday playing 3 triples against Great Holland's finished a successful week on a on a winning note. 
Twyford won on 2 of the 3 rinks with Ann Pope having the winning rink.  Twyford won by 46-37.

Friday 13th July.  v. Palmer Park
Another win in men's KLV Div 1 against Palmer Park on Friday confirmed the change of fortune, Twyford won two triples led by 
Barry Carter (20 - 11) and Nick Orde (16 - 13), with the third triple led by Brian Stain being drawn (18 - 18).  Overall, 
Twyford won the game by 54 to 42 shots, to gain 9 points in the league compared to the 1 point gained by Palmer Park for the drawn triple.

Wednesday 11th July.  v. Wargrave (Daws Cup) postponed.
Wednesday should have seen a Cup match with Wargrave, but was cancelled by our opponents due to the world cup (as it seems many clubs games were)

Tuesday 10th July.  v. Hurst
Twyford ladies must be hoping their luck has changed following a very good win at home against Hurst on Tuesday. Playing 3 triples 
Twyford won on all 3 rinks, with a 30 point advantage 43-13.

Tuesday 10th July.  v. Woodley (KL)
Also on Tuesday Twyford's men played an away in the KL East Division 3 against Woodley.  Twyford won on two rinks led by 
Barry Carter (23 - 19) and Phil Rose (17 - 16); but lost on the two rinks led by Brian Stain (16 - 24) and Nick Orde (16 - 20).  
Overall, Twyford lost by 72 - 79 shots, meaning that Twyford gained 4 points, against the 10 points gained by Woodley.

Sunday 8th July.  Presidents v Captains BBQ Day
And finally on Sunday the traditional BBQ followed by Presidents versus Captains, a great social occasion followed by a competitive game, 
though  in the searing heat it was decided 10 ends would be enough. It was very close, 
the captains winning by 2 games to 1 with just 3 shots in it 28-25.

Friday 6th July.  v. Suttons 'A' (KLV)
A disastrous result for the men on Friday in the KLV Division 1 against Suttons 'A' team.  Twyford lost all three triples led by Barry Carter (12 - 31), 
Gordon Wheeler (18 - 21) and Brian Stain (4 - 20).  Overall, Twyford lost by 34 - 72 shots, 
meaning that it was null points for Twyford, against all 10 points gained by Suttons 'A'.

Friday 6th July.  County Triples at Suttons 
Also on Friday evening the men competed in the quarter final County Triples at Suttons a great achievement for 
Phil Rose, Paul Hynes and Nick Orde to get so far, but alas they were out played by S.Winkskill and his team from Tilehurst who won 26-5.


Tuesday 3rd July.  v. Great Hollands
Tuesday finally bought success to the ladies triples. The ladies travelled to Great Hollands, 
where skip Ann Pope won her rink with a great back up from Trish Gaskell, the final score was a close 29-26

Tuesday 3rd July.  v. Suttons 'B' (KL)
Twyford won their home game in the KL East 3rd Division against a Suttons 'B' team. 
Twyford won on two rinks led by Brian Stain (23 - 19) and Nick Orde (20 - 10) respectively; 
and lost on two rinks led by Barry Carter (17 - 19) and Phil Rose (14 - 22) respectively.  
This resulted in a 74 - 70 shots victory for Twyford, which gave them 10 points in the league for the win, 
with 4 points going to the Suttons 'B' team.

Sunday 1st July.  Davis Tate Triples Trophy
Sunday was competition time with 8 teams competing for the Davis Tate Triples Trophy, once again a very hot afternoon, 
but it was a good friendly contest, the winners were Ann Harris skip, Ken Pope (man of the match) and Tony Turner. 
Davis Tate manager Amy Shields was on hand to present the trophy.


Saturday 1st July.  Summer Fun Day
Saturday was Fun Day for Twyford, old and new members came together for a relaxed afternoon in the scorching heat, 
competing in a variety of different games on the green, great fun was had by all.


Wednesday 29th June.  v. Bracknell 'A'
Fridays KLV was an away game against  Bracknell 'A'.  Twyford won only one triple led by Nick Orde, 
and lost the other two triples led by Barry Carter and Brian Stain.  Overall, Twyford lost by 42-57 shots 
meaning that Twyford only gained 2 points, against the 8 points gained by Bracknell 'A'

Wednesday 27th was a home game of 5 mixed triples on a very hot evening , against Palmer Park.  
It was another  bad result for Twyford, losing on all rinks.63-108

Monday 25th June.  Champion of Champions
Monday evening saw Twyford's  Barry Carter take on Richard Heathman from Windsor & Eton in the Champion of Champions, 
it was an enthralling game with nothing to choose between the two, Carter finally took it on the last end to win 21-20


Sunday 24th June.  v. Reading
On Sunday Twyford travelled to Reading for a friendly 5 rinks of triples. A perfect sunny afternoon for bowls that ended with 
Reading winning 66-95, Twyford's top rink was skipped by Phil Rose, with Jean  Bennett and Peter Gaskell 16-12.

Saturday 16th June.  v. Desborough
On Saturday Twyford (short on players) travelled to old friends Desborough for a 6 rink triples match. 
The rain threatened, but luckily held off and a good time was had by all. Twyford's top rink was skipped by Phil Rose, 
with Ann Harris and Katie Cole, unlucky Gordon Wheeler who was winning for the whole game, but lost 3, on the last end, 
to lose his game.
A close match, and a win for Desborough  93-106.

Friday 15th June.  v. Wokingham B (KLV)
KLV, On Friday Twyford lost on 2 rinks with Brian Stain who skipped his rink to a 20-10 saving the day brilliantly 
for the third time this week.  Shots for Twyford were 43 with 50 against, resulting in a 8 - 2 points win for Reading B.

Thursday 14th June.  County Pairs  v. Sunningdale 
On Thursday Phil Rose and Paul Hynes were ready for the next leg of the County Pairs in a home match against Sunningdale, 
they played a steady confident game resulting in a  23-11 win to take them through to a place in the last 16. 


Wednesday 13th June.  v. Hurst

with 87 against, resulting in a 
12-2 points win for Reading B.

Kennet League, . On Monday Twyford played Wokingham C  in a replay of a game that was abandoned on the 29th May due to a downpour, 
Twyford lost on 3 rinks and won 1.  Shots for Twyford were 54, with 88 against, resulting in a 12-2 points win for Wokingham.

In the County Pairs Phil Rose and Paul Hynes travelled to Desborough and after a very bad start, 
losing 6 on the first end the game evened out,  and at 21 ends it was 18 all, necessitating an extra end. 
Desborough were holding 3, but Rose who had the last wood triumphantly took the game. 19-18


Sunday 10th June.  v. Sunningdale
Despite losing on 4 of the 5 rinks at Sunnindale on Sunday, 
Twyford's only  winning rink  with skip Gordon Wheeler with wife Mary and Steve Chamberlain  
managed an impressive 32-6 to win the match 86-80.


Saturday 9th June.  v. Suttons
Saturday 9th saw Twyford journey to Suttons where the team and the green proved too much for everyone, 
Twyford were trailing the whole time and lost on every rink, though skip Barry Carter got within one point on his rink.

Twyford won two of their triples  and lost one triple, to win the match by 57 - 53 shots. 
This result gives Twyford victory by 8 points to two points for Maiden Erlegh A in the Central East Division 1.

On Saturday 2nd Twyford played host to University of Reading Bowls Club, a warm pleasant afternoon perfect for bowls.  
Twyford lost 62- 80 although it was two rinks apiece with Twyford's secret weapon of Mr and Mrs Orde, 
who both skipped a rink and both won.

On Friday the Twyford's men played the KLV against Wokingham A. Twyford only won on one triple, 
skipped by Nick Orde, narrowly lost on the last end in the second triple, and were well beaten in the third triple,  
losing overall by 8 shots (47 - 55).   Points Twyford 2  Wokingham A  8.

Tuesday 29th May.  Palmer Park & Wokingham C (KL)
Twyford  had a bad start to the week on Tuesdays, with the Ladies Triples and the Kennet league both abandoned 
due to heavy rain. In the County Fours the Twyford ladies were well outplayed by Didcot losing  6-34, 
however Phil Rose and Paul Hynes were successful in the County Pairs against the strong 
opposition of Sunningdale, coming out victorious 20-18.

Sunday was an entirely different matter when Twyford welcomed Farley Hill, it was a hot humid afternoon with storms forecast, luckily the predicted storms held off. This time Twyford won on all four rinks, with skip Phil Rose having top rink. Final score 72-48.

It was a very disappointing result with Skip Nick Orde winning the only rink for Twyford, whilst Barry Carter and Rita Orde , both had very close games. Final result 100-124 to Desborough.

Monday 14th May.  Royal Household (County Game)
Monday evening saw a third round men's triples county match against Royal Household, a tough match, 
every point was hard fought, the game was equal at the 17th end with it all to play for, Paul Hines, 
Nick Orde and skip Phil Rose came good on the last end and won the match 14 - 11 which takes them through to the last 16.
Meanwhile the Ladies County Fours was a very exciting game, at half time Twyford were down 5-21 playing at the Royal Household, 
but a remarkable fightback saw them at level peggins at 21 ends, needing an extra end 
before a jubilant Twyford  Ann Harris, Ann Pope, Rita Orde, Jan Walker  succeeded in winning 23-22 and also going through to the last 16.

On Saturday Twyford played a friendly away fixture against Maidenhead Town, 
as the match started so did the rain, which steadily got worse causing the game to be abandoned after 10 ends.  
The 4 mixed triples match was drawn on rinks with 2 wins each, but the point difference gave the game to Town.

Twyfords first match of the season  began on an unbelievably cold Tuesday evening  in the men's   Kennet League against Maidenhead Town B, losing on 3 rinks with P.Rose managing to secure a draw on the last end, the final score was  63-73.

The 2017 season has now wound up culminating in the Club Championship Finals.


Finals Week-end 9/10th September.

Twyford held a successful finals weekend despite the wet conditions, with a total of thirteen competitions contested over the two days. 
 The highlight of the weekend was the ladies championship in which Ann Pope staged a strong comeback from 10-3 down to level things up 
at 19-19 before Ann Harris picked up the two shots needed for victory. In the mens championship there was an impressive win for 
Barry Carter against Paul Hynes who led 7-6 at 6 ends before Carter imposed his class on the game, scoring 15 shots over the next 7 ends
 to claim victory by 21 shots to 8. An extra end was required to settle a closely contested mixed triples game which eventually went to 
Nick Orde, Gordon Wheeler and Jean Bennett by 17 shots to 16. The best individual performance of the weekend came from Brian Stain who 
won three of the four finals that he took part in with victories in the mixed handicap, mens two wood and the husband and wife 
competition. In the mixed pairs Mike Self and Annette Stain maintained their unbeaten record in the competition, winning for the third 
time in four years, but were pushed all the way by Mick Kenway and  Kathy Lewis before picking up five shot in the last two ends to win 
by 19 shots to 13. The mens novices went to Terry Thorne by 21 shots to 12 and Carol Hooke took the ladies novices by 21 shots to 15.

FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the 2017 season at Twyford Bowling Club

I look forward to the new season with expectation of you all having a happy and successful season.  As Chairman with a willing Committee I am sure we can.  We are here for you, so contact any one of us if you have any concerns or worries within the Club.

Having looked at the fixtures for the coming season it will be another busy year with plenty of opportunity to play bowls both for the club and in all manner of competitions.

With all the fixtures arranged and the Competitions set up the most important part has to be ready for all these games to be played, which of course is the green.

Since last season our green team have worked all winter to upkeep the playing surface and the surrounds plus a tidy up of the carpark. So I would like to thank them all for their hard work. We have a great green and a great team to service it so please support them and use it and encourage others to join with us. Remember the Club is you, its success or failure depends on you.

The Club has now entered its 81st year so let us make this year a great year.  Support your captains and go that extra mile to help the Club succeed by adding your name to any of the team sheets so they have a better chance to select teams and complete the fixtures.

A warm welcome is extended to our new members.  We hope you enjoy your bowling at Twyford and thank you for joining.  Now you are a member please come and join in as much as you can because the more you play the better you will become.

They say it is only a game and winning is most satisfying, but so is the pleasure of good company and friendship which we have here at Twyford Bowling Club.

COMPETITIONS 2017

Hi everyone. It’s time to consider your competition entries for 2017. Doesn’t time fly? I hope you will enter as many competitions as possible this year. We do need your support to make them as successful as we possibly can, and don’t forget it can only improve your bowling.

We have made a CHANGE TO THE COMPETITION RULES this year. The rule that states that you can’t enter the novices competition after you have been a member of the club for 5 years has been removed, so that it opens up the competition to all members who have not won a singles competition at this or any other bowling club. So please put your name down if you fit this, new criteria.

Over the past two years we have not had any takers for the Benevolent Triples. This competition is open to men only. The winners of this will then go on to represent the club in the county competition in the following year. So it is really important to do all we can to help to send a team to represent us in the county competition next year. We are proposing to make a day for this competition to hopefully encourage some entrants.  We are also proposing to hold a ladies triples competition alongside the Benevolent Triples, to make an enjoyable day for all. This one will be a club only competition, as there is no such competition at county level. The cost to enter these two competitions is £1 per person. Please see entry form for more details. 

I shall look forward to receiving your entry forms shortly. Good luck to all who enter. Remember to arrange your matches as soon as possible and of course enjoy them.
